Delaware roads are hard on alignment. Winter potholes, construction zones and curbs all take a toll, as do the long highway runs on I-95 and Route 1. A car that's out of alignment wears tires out early, doesn't handle the way it should, and can hurt your fuel economy. Here are five signs it's time to get it checked, plus what a proper alignment and tire service at Peak Performance Automotive includes.
At 663 Dawson Dr. in Newark, our ASE Certified Technicians handle alignments, tire replacement, mounting and balancing, and rotations for all makes and models. Newark drivers have trusted us since 2010. We're rated 4.8★ on Google and were named a CARFAX Top-Rated shop for 2025.
5 Signs You Need a Wheel Alignment
1. Your car pulls to one side
On a straight, flat road, your car should track straight with a light grip on the wheel. If it pulls or drifts, the alignment is a likely suspect.
2. The steering wheel is crooked
If the logo is off-center when you're driving straight, your alignment has likely shifted.
3. Uneven tire wear
Wear on just the inside or outside edge of a tire is a classic alignment symptom. A feathered or scalloped tread is another warning sign.
4. You hit a big pothole or curb
One hard hit can knock alignment out. If the car feels different afterward, get it checked.
5. You just bought tires or had suspension work
An alignment protects your new tires and makes sure new parts are set correctly.
Signs it may be your tires
- Vibration in the steering wheel or seat at highway speed, often a balance issue.
- Squealing tires on normal turns.
- Low tread. A quick check is the penny test: if you can see the top of Lincoln's head, it's time to have your tires measured.
What an Alignment Involves
- A pre-alignment check of tires, steering and suspension parts. Worn tie rods or ball joints can prevent an alignment from holding.
- Measurement of camber, caster and toe, the angles that control how your tires meet the road, against your vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
- Adjustment back to spec, with a printout of the before and after readings where available.
- A test drive to confirm the steering wheel is centered and the car tracks straight.

Alignment, Tires and Suspension Work Together
An alignment can only be as good as the parts holding your wheels in place. If we find worn control arm bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints or struts, we'll show you before recommending an alignment. That way you aren't paying to align a car that won't stay aligned. Our suspension and steering service covers those repairs.
Tires also affect braking. Worn or mismatched tires lengthen stopping distances, especially in rain. That's one reason we look at tire condition during every brake service. Tires and brakes are also on the safety checklist at the Delaware DMV inspection.

Wheel Alignment and Tire FAQ
How often do I need a wheel alignment?
Have your alignment checked about once a year. Also check it whenever you get new tires, after a hard pothole or curb strike, or if you notice pulling or uneven wear. Your owner's manual may list a specific interval.
Should I get an alignment when I buy new tires?
It's a smart idea. Putting new tires on a car that's out of alignment can wear them out early. We'll check the alignment when we install your tires and tell you if it needs adjustment.
What's the difference between balancing and alignment?
Balancing evens out the weight around each tire and wheel so it spins smoothly without vibration. Alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels so they point straight and sit correctly on the road. They solve different problems, and many vehicles need both.
How often should tires be rotated?
Many manufacturers recommend every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, which is often at oil change time. Check your owner's manual for your vehicle's interval.
Can you align my truck, SUV or European car?
Yes. We service all makes and models, including trucks, SUVs and European vehicles.
