That registration renewal notice just showed up, which means it's inspection time. Nobody loves waiting in the DMV lane, and nobody really loves waiting in it twice. Here's how Delaware inspections work, what they look at, and a simple checklist to help you pass on the first try.
How Delaware car inspection works
- The DMV does the inspection, not a private shop. Inspections happen at Delaware's four DMV facilities. For Newark drivers, the closest are Wilmington and Delaware City.
- It's free. The DMV performs inspections at no charge. Just don't miss your expiration date, because a late renewal adds a $20 fee.
- You can go early. You can inspect up to 90 days before your registration expires, and going early doesn't change your expiration date.
- Newer cars may skip it. For the newest seven model years (10,000 lbs or less), the DMV may only require a VIN check.
What the DMV checks
- Safety items, including tires, brakes and windows
- Emissions, which for most cars from 1996 and newer means an OBD II test: the DMV plugs into your car's computer
- A fuel system leak test
Because that OBD II test reads your car's computer, a lit check engine light is one of the most common reasons cars don't pass.
Your pre-inspection checklist
Run through this a week or two before your DMV visit:
- Check engine light is off. If it's on, get it diagnosed first. Don't just clear the code; a freshly reset computer may not be ready to test.
- Tires have good tread and no bulges, cuts or exposed cords.
- Brakes stop straight and quiet, with no grinding or soft pedal.
- Lights all work: headlights, high beams, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights and the license plate light.
- Windshield has no big cracks in the driver's view, and the wipers clear the glass.
- Horn works.
- Gas cap clicks shut and the seal isn't cracked.
- No exhaust leaks, rattles or loud noises.
- Paperwork: current registration and proof of insurance in the car.

Do new cars need inspection in Delaware? Vehicles in the newest seven model years weighing 10,000 lbs or less may only need a VIN verification.
